Does Your Soul Have A Price?
One of the main factors that has always kept Black America from collectively rising above our oppressors and attaining our freedom is the amount of sell outs that are among us. By sell outs, I mean a person who is willing to go against what they know to be morally right in exchange for financial gain or acceptance into the upper echelon of society; even at the expense of exploiting their own people. And from the days of slavery to our present day, there has always been a large minority of black folks who would rather sell their soul to our oppressors for money, fame, or acceptance into the white man’s demonic Babylonian system of America, rather than fight against them and be free.
The notion of selling out first took root in the 1700’s, during our ancestor’s 3rd century of enslavement, when all of the slave revolts were happening. To prevent slaves from killing their slavemasters and escaping the plantation, the state of Virginia created a law called Meritorious Manumission Act, that rewarded slaves with privileges or freedom who would snitch on other slaves that were planning a slave rebellion escape. After the creation of this law, many slaves turned on their own people and sold them out to massa in exchange for money and freedom. Due to the success of this law, many other states created similar laws to restrict blacks from escaping slavery as well. And just like in Virginia, many of the slaves across the nation had turned their own people in exchange for Massa’s rewards; which is where we get the term selling out from.
Although we are no longer slaves today in the physical sense, there are more sell outs among us today than there ever were back then. I submit to you that the vast majority of our wealthiest and most prominent black people in America today, are all sell outs. I say this because there is no way a black man or woman in America can attain wealth and power in White America unless they exploit their own people. Take for instance our black politicians such as Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Both of these guys are hand-picked by the government to represent black people and paid to stay silent about any issues that will cause black people to unite and become independent of the government. This is why the government never passes laws that will give black people justice or reparations because almost all of the black politicians who can bring our issues to the forefront are paid to shut up. And it’s not just Jesse and Al, it’s almost every notable black politician there is.
The same goes for black pastors. Take a look at our most prominent black pastors such as Creflo Dollar and T.D. Jakes for instance. Both of these guys are good friends with the government and run state-owned 501c3 churches that rake in millions of dollars a year from tithe money of the local low-income black community. This is why most black people who are members of churches likes these are living check to check and will remain living check to check because all of their money goes to the church. It’s a complete scam. Think about it. There is a church on every corner within a 5 mile radius of every black neighborhood in America. If these churches were really there to help our people, then they would be sowing 90% of the tithe money they receive from the community back into the community to create businesses and jobs for our people. Instead, they take the money and create wealth for themselves. This is why you don’t see many christian pastors speaking up for our people and preaching truth to power like they did back in the day because most of them are just money-hungry sell outs paid by the government to keep us mentally brainwashed; so that we do not wake up and rise up against the system.
However, it’s not just our pastors and politicians who have sold out; it’s also our movie stars and film producers. Take screenwriters and producers Lee Daniels and Tyler Perry for instance. Both of these guys support homosexuality and have been giving the green light by Hollywood to create television shows that promote this lifestyle to the black community. Lee Daniels’ tv show, Empire makes a complete mockery of the black family; promoting gay relationships, interracial dating, and black people being criminals. Tyler Perry’s tv show, The Haves and Have Nots, promotes the homosexual lifestyle as something to be accepted rather than rejected and showcases black men as being abusers and black women as being mentally ill. This is why there is so much homosexuality and dysfunction in the black family today because it’s promoted all over the tv and media. And the reason shows like these are allowed to air is because the white folks who fund the tv stations they premier on are all racist and take pride in airing shows that will destroy the black community.
Perhaps the best example of modern day sell outs among our people are our rappers in the hip hop community. Unlike the 50’s – 90’s, when our musicians would create uplifting music that was strictly for our people, the vast majority of our musicians today have sold out and chosen to create music for everyone to make more money. Not only that, but todays music also degrades our race instead of uplifting us. For instance, mainstream rappers like Lil Wayne and 50 Cent have been promoting the glorification of selling crack, having promiscuous sex, murdering on our own people, and loving money above all else in their music for over a decade now. And the white-owned record labels who these artists are signed to pay them millions of dollars to do so. Therefore, even if these artists are aware that their music is destroying the minds of our youth; they are under contract to keep doing it and they get paid too much to turn it down. So in essence, they’ve sold their soul to the Devil, as Kayne West admitted to doing.
But selling out doesn’t just stop at hip hop; it is also very prevalent in the sports arena as well. Have you ever wondered why black athletes of today don’t stand up for their people or speak out against institutional racism like our athletes Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Wilma Rudolph did in the 60’s? It’s because they get paid triple the amount of what athletes made back then and they don’t want to risk losing it for speaking out on our behalf. You see, today’s most popular athletes such as Lebron James and Cam Newton, not only get paid millions of dollars from their teams; they also get paid millions from their endorsements and sponsors. And if they publicly speak out against the daily racial injustices we face such as the police gunning us down in the street every day; they will most likely be fined by the league and will lose their endorsement deals. So they keep quiet in order to keep their millions.
I could go on and on about the many fields that our people sell out in, but I think by now you get the point. As you can see from the examples I’ve given above, many of our people clearly have a price for which they will sell their soul. They may not have started out in their field with the intent of selling out; but once the government or an organization offered them a check for a certain amount, they quickly have a change of heart and become silent on anything related to our people. And this is why we as Black Americans have never been able to come together in unity and get the justice or liberation that we deserve, because there are just too many of us whose soul has a price.
Dr. Martin Luther King once stated that “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” This statement is so true because when I look around at all of the sell outs that are within our race today, it is very evident that many of us are dead. We are alive in body; but dead in our spirits. Our spirits are eager to speak truth to power about the way we are treated but the money convinces us to keep quiet; therefore our spirit dies. This is the consequence of selling out; you gain the world, but lose your soul. With that being said, I’d like to end this article by challenging my readers to submit your life to the will of The Most High so that no amount of money will persuade you to sell yourself or your people out.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” – Mark 8:36
